17:9 book of the law. One of Jehoshaphat’s major accomplishments was to have the people instructed once again in the Scriptures, which at that time still consisted mostly of the Pentateuch. Despite all the good deeds of his father Asa, the people had for a long time “been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law” (II Chronicles 15:3). God blessed Jehoshaphat’s reign because of this.
17:14 three hundred thousand. The numbers given in II Chronicles 17:14-18 probably represent men available for fighting if needed, rather than a standing army.
